Donnie
The Demon is first mentioned during Gruff and Subject’s Underground meeting.
Subject: “Oh… the brother?”
Gruff: “The Demon? Didn’t see him. I still get mixed reports, you know but usually that he isn’t there.
When Joan arrives at the Ruckus, Abarth chides her for following “a voice in The Demon’s head.” Joan locates Hank and tells him, “They found your brother.”
Hank deduces that his brother is not alone, and Joan confirms he is with a desert tribe far to the south. We briefly see the one called the Demon lying semi-conscious among a group of others in a similar state.
When Hank and the Horde arrive at the distant tribe’s camp, the leader states that a brotherhood is a rare and powerful thing, and they respect that bond, but The Demon does not want visitors. Hank insists on seeing his brother but loses focus when he becomes intoxicated by a hallucinogen in his drink.
The Demon awakes from his own drug trip near where Hank admonishes the Mystic for misleading his people with these “false claims.” Hank demonstrates the Mystic’s lack of power by striking him to the ground. Hank finds his brother’s tent and they speak. We learn the Demon’s name is Donnie. When Donnie expresses surprise that there were no gunshots at the camp, Hank explains that the tribe converted willingly upon seeing their totem’s failure to protect the Mystic from Hank’s assault. “So it was here; so it will be in Boomtown.”
Hank and Donnie speak about their past disagreements. We learn that Donnie and Hank disagree about the vision’s message and the relic they are seeking:
Hank refers to “the burden” when Donnie chides him for his “slaving and slaughtering.” Donnie responds, “Well, you have your burden and I have mine.” He further alludes to Hank losing sight of the importance of finding the relic over building an army.
Donnie believes they will find the relic first, and the minds of men will be ‘changed’. Hank believes they must demand that others align with the Horde in their mission to find the relic.
Donnie believes the relic may be found somewhere in the wilderness - somewhere that won’t require confrontation. Hank believes it can only be in the city, and that the urgency of acting now is clear from an alignment of recent events - Tim’s procurement of a way inside the city, Ricky’s pamphlet indicating the Towners are looking for a savior, and the one remaining thing - finding Donnie.
