Subject

Subject is a man in his fifties or sixties. He wears glasses and dresses like a Maker, though he wears no armband and his hat lacks the vaguely triangular shape of an Institutional officer’s.

We meet Subject as he is on his way to an Underground meeting with the Gruff Man. To obtain entry to the meeting location, Subject drops a token into a blind man’s cup. The man verifies the token, gives a secret knock, and a nearby door swings open.

Subject may be from Hightown. He speaks with the unpretentious formality of the privileged, and the Gruff Man says they could have met there. Subject also appears to be in a position to provide Hightown vouchers and tokens for entry into more Underground meetings.

This is a meeting about information. Subject is the buyer. Gruff relays the details of the Hangman Horde’s recent appearance in the slums and the fact that Ricky was left behind, alive. Gruff shows him Ricky’s pamphlet. This is surprising news to Subject, who studies the pamphlet for the remainder of the scene.

Subject also asks about “the brother,” and seems disappointed when Gruff’s reports indicate “the Demon” hasn’t been seen lately.
